I'm not sure they are better than other externally disciplined clock alternatives for me, such as NTP and GPS, and I suspect for many other customers there is a similar dilemma. Clock Wave allows you calibrate radio controlled watch or clock anytime and anywhere. While I'm intrigued by these new models considering my legacy RCC from La Crosse no longer receive a intelligible signal over the radio frequency interference (RFI). Developing radio frequency (RF) integrated circuits (IC) chips is specialized and pricey, so there don't tend to be a lot of competitors. I don't know what receivers 'legacy' La Crosse RCC use, but I've seen one claim ( unverified) that the UltrAtomic use the Everset Technologies module, which cost significantly more than the defunct Temic / C-MAX modules, and roughly double the simple, low-cost Micro Analog System (MAS) modules in low volumes. I haven't checked, but I suspect that the other national time signals haven't been updated to utilize the phase modulation as used by WWVB, so there is little incentive for multi-band receivers (or modules) to support this mode for a single station.

An example is Casio's popular G-Shock series include multi-band receivers on a number of their models. In general it seems radio controlled clocks (RCC), watches, and similar are often now developed as multi-band models, which makes sense for both the a global market, and for the increasingly mobile consumer. There is a module from Everset Technologies called the ES100, If you want them in small quantities, Universal Solder sells them to Canada/US.

The La Crosse wall clocks may be the only consumer-oriented radio controlled clocks (RCC) that utilize the new PM portion of the signal. I didn't know about the addition of an 'enhanced' phase modulation (PM) signal until you mentioned it, I vaguely recall the WWVB service disruptions circa 2012 for its introduction, but I didn't look into the service disruption / upgrades at the time.

Combined with auto DST, auto sync, etc that means I can put it on the wall and most likely only take it down every 5 years as opposed to those alarm clocks which have to be changed/updated when the router or the wifi password changes.ĭo you read the NIST article as not being in favor of these WWVB clocks generally? That said, the LaCross clocks above (which retail for about $50) run 4~7 years on 4 "c" batteries. I've got some alarm clocks which, being internet connected, do get highly accurate time over my network but I don't recall seeing nice looking analog wall clocks that sync via wifi.

I'm just asking about this new technology because it sounds like the signal is even more effective so as long as I'm upgrading I'd like to upgrade to the newer signal technology. I'd seen the NIST page before, while it documents some issues that people have I've owned clocks that sync to the WWVB signal for 20 years and have found them generally excellent. I'm not sure I understand the connection between the two comments.
